The range of materials used for welding is being continuously extended, and the demands placed on systems for bonding plastics and plastic composites on a thermoplastic basis are also becoming ever more complex. Besides criteria such as the tightness and strength of the bonds, the economic and increasingly also ecological aspects of the technology employed are becoming ever more important.

Ultrasonic welding is proving to be the optimum solution here. One key advantage it offers is that its energy consumption is considerably lower than other processes, most of which rely on the principle of heat. Ultrasonic systems can be found in applications using thermoplastic, polymer-compatible plastics and applications with exacting demands on the bonding technology.

With ultrasonic welding, the heat required for plastification is generated by converting ultrasonic oscillations into mechanical oscillations and then directing these at a specific contact pressure via the sonotrode to the workpiece to be welded. The ultrasonic oscillations generate frictional heat on the bonding surfaces of the workpieces, which in turn causes the material to melt and then bonds the parts to one another. This plastification allows one or multiple workpieces to be welded, cut, punched, riveted or embossed in a cycled fashion or continuously.

Ultrasonic welding allows fast processing times with a high degree of process stability and excels through the quality, strength and precise reproducibility of the welded joints.
